The evidence

What a rheumatology expert witness is asked to determine

Rheumatology claims often turn on whether inflammatory disease was distinguished from degenerative change, and how quickly treatment followed. Serology, imaging, joint counts and drug monitoring results establish the sequence. Degenerative change is common and often incidental, so the report should state which findings are attributable to the disease in issue and which are age-related.

  • Whether the symptoms and examination findings recorded warranted urgent rheumatology referral.
  • Whether serology and imaging were undertaken and interpreted appropriately.
  • Whether disease-modifying treatment was started within an appropriate period.
  • Whether monitoring of immunosuppressive therapy met the requirements applying to it.
  • How far joint damage is attributable to delay rather than to the natural course of the disease.

Practitioners are listed across all four UK nations. Location can be narrowed in the register’s location listings before an instruction is made.

Report routes

Reports prepared

Serology, imaging and monitoring records support a records review report. A breach and causation report then addresses the damage attributed to delay.

A condition and prognosis report addresses continuing symptoms and function. Each report page records what that type of report contains.

Rheumatology expert witness evidence

A rheumatologist expert witness separates inflammatory from degenerative change and states what the serology and imaging support about timing.

The listing carries discipline and coverage; the instruction is agreed with the practitioner. See the British Society for Rheumatology alongside the case material.
