The evidence
What a radiology expert witness is asked to determine
Radiology evidence often distinguishes a perceptual question from an interpretive one. A later re-read with the diagnosis known is not the same task as deciding whether the abnormality was reportable on the original imaging and clinical information.
- Whether an abnormality was visible and reportable on the imaging available at the time.
- Whether the report accurately described, interpreted and prioritised the relevant findings.
- Whether an urgent or unexpected result required communication or further imaging.
- Whether the requested examination and imaging pathway were appropriate to the clinical presentation.
- Where radiology evidence must be read with pathology, surgery, neurology or oncology evidence.

Reports prepared
A records review report can deal with the contemporaneous material where an examination is not required. A breach and causation report can separate the standard-of-care question from the clinical consequence alleged.
