What a wildlife expert witness is asked to determine
Wildlife matters can involve injury, disease, husbandry, transport, rehabilitation or the interpretation of veterinary records. The report should distinguish factual observations, clinical opinion and any assumptions about the animal, environment or available records.
- Whether the examination, treatment, handling or rehabilitation was appropriate for the species and condition.
- Whether records, photographs, imaging or laboratory results support the clinical conclusion advanced.
- Whether disease, injury, nutrition, enclosure or transport conditions are relevant to welfare or outcome.
- Whether a specialist in zoo, wildlife, avian, aquatic or exotic-animal practice is required.
- What limits arise from incomplete records, unknown history or the absence of contemporaneous examination.
