County court jurisdiction

Section 1 of the Justice Act (Northern Ireland) 2015 provides that Northern Ireland is no longer divided into county court divisions and petty sessions districts, and that the jurisdiction and powers of a county court or a magistrates’ court are exercisable throughout Northern Ireland. It came into operation on 31 October 2016.

03

Administrative divisions

Section 2 of the same Act preserves administrative court divisions. The Department, after consultation with the Lord Chief Justice, divides Northern Ireland into divisions by direction, and those divisions may differ for all purposes of a court or for specified purposes.
