What a veterinary expert witness is asked to determine
Veterinary evidence can concern companion animals, equine work, livestock, surgery, imaging or standards of care. The register listing provides a route to practitioners; the scope of the report and availability are agreed directly with the individual practitioner.
- Whether the history, examination, investigation and treatment plan were appropriate for the animal and presentation.
- Whether clinical records, imaging, laboratory results or post-mortem material support the opinion sought.
- Whether a delay, procedure, medication or husbandry issue altered outcome.
- Whether the evidence requires a species-specific or surgical sub-specialist opinion.
- What conclusions can be drawn from the records and where assumptions need to be stated.

Reports prepared
A records review report can deal with the contemporaneous material where an examination is not required. A breach and causation report can separate the standard-of-care question from the clinical consequence alleged.
