What a nephrology expert witness is asked to determine
Renal claims usually depend on a series of results rather than one. Creatinine trends, fluid balance charts, prescribing records and dialysis documentation establish whether deterioration was recognised and whether the response was adequate. Baseline renal function is often unrecorded, and the report should state what baseline has been assumed and what follows if that assumption is wrong.
- Whether a rising creatinine or falling urine output was recognised and acted upon.
- Whether nephrotoxic medication was reviewed and adjusted as the results required.
- Whether fluid management was appropriate to the balance recorded.
- Whether referral for renal replacement therapy occurred within an appropriate period.
