What a hepatology expert witness is asked to determine
Liver claims frequently rest on trends rather than single results. Serial liver function tests, imaging, prescribing records and alcohol or viral hepatitis history together establish what should have been recognised and when. Alcohol history, prescribed medication and viral serology each affect attribution, and the report should separate them rather than treating the picture as a single cause.
- Whether abnormal liver function results were recognised, investigated and monitored.
- Whether drug-induced liver injury was considered where the prescribing record supports it.
- Whether imaging and surveillance for cirrhosis or malignancy were undertaken at appropriate intervals.
- Whether decompensation, variceal bleeding or encephalopathy was recognised and treated in time.
- Whether transplant referral was considered where the recorded criteria indicate it.
