Electrophysiology expert witnesses
Listed electrophysiology expert witnesses address rhythm disturbance, device therapy and catheter ablation. The evidence normally concerns interpretation of a recorded rhythm and the decision that followed it.

The evidence
What an electrophysiology expert witness is asked to determine
Electrophysiology instructions turn on documents that are technical and precise: twelve-lead ECGs, ambulatory monitoring, device interrogation reports and procedure records. The question is usually whether the recorded rhythm called for a different decision. Because a rhythm abnormality may be intermittent, the absence of a finding on one recording does not establish that it was absent at another time.
- Whether the rhythm recorded was correctly identified and its significance appreciated.
- Whether ambulatory monitoring or electrophysiological study was indicated by the symptoms documented.
- Whether device implantation, programming and follow-up met the expected standard.
- Whether an ablation procedure was appropriately indicated, performed and consented.
- Whether anticoagulation decisions reflected the risk assessment recorded at the time.
Practitioners are listed across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. Location can be narrowed in the register’s location listings before an instruction is made.

Reports prepared
Device interrogation and monitoring data support a records review report. A breach and causation report separates the interpretation criticised from the consequence.
Where a procedure is in issue, the operative record may require separate consideration. The individual report pages describe what each route contains.
Electrophysiology expert witness evidence
An electrophysiology expert witness interprets the recorded rhythm and device data, and states what the record supports about the decision taken.
The register publishes the listing; scope and conflicts are addressed with the practitioner. See the NICE atrial fibrillation guidance alongside the case material.

Questions answered
Frequently asked questions
Will an Electrophysiology expert witness respond to Part 35 questions?
Yes - CPR 35.6 entitles the parties to put written questions on a report, and answering them is part of the expert's duty to the court. A Electrophysiology report prepared for proceedings in England and Wales carries the Part 35 statement of truth, with equivalent duties applying in the other UK jurisdictions.
Can an Electrophysiology expert act as a single joint expert?
Where the court directs a single joint expert under CPR 35.7, the instruction is agreed between the parties and put jointly - a routine basis of instruction in this field. Whether a particular practitioner accepts SJE appointments is confirmed with the practitioner at the enquiry stage.
Will the expert attend joint discussions or give evidence at trial?
Where the court directs discussions between experts under CPR 35.12, they meet and produce a joint statement of what is agreed and what is disputed; attendance at trial - in person or by video link - is likewise a matter of court direction. These commitments are confirmed with the practitioner at instruction.
Can I choose an Electrophysiology expert of a specific gender, or one who assesses remotely?
Yes on both counts. Every listing displays the practitioner's gender, consulting locations and assessment types - face to face, remote or both - so sensitive-instruction preferences can be applied at the shortlisting stage, before any contact is made.
