Diabetes expert witnesses
Listed diabetes expert witnesses address glycaemic management, complications and the recognition of acute metabolic emergencies. Foot disease, retinopathy and nephropathy each raise separate questions about screening and referral.

The evidence
What a diabetes expert witness is asked to determine
Diabetes claims usually rest on a long record rather than a single consultation. Glucose readings, medication changes, annual review entries and podiatry or ophthalmology screening results establish what was monitored and what was missed. Where a claim concerns foot disease, the podiatry and vascular record usually determines whether the deterioration was avoidable at the stage alleged.
- Whether glycaemic control was monitored and treatment adjusted in line with the results recorded.
- Whether ketoacidosis, hypoglycaemia or hyperosmolar states were recognised and treated appropriately.
- Whether foot risk assessment, screening and referral took place at the intervals the records required.
- Whether retinal and renal screening results were acted upon.
- What difference earlier intervention would probably have made to the complication alleged.
Practitioners are listed across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. Location can be narrowed in the register’s location listings before an instruction is made.

Reports prepared
The long-term record supports a records review report setting out monitoring and review. A breach and causation report then addresses the complication alleged.
Where amputation or visual loss is in issue, further specialty evidence is normally required. Each report page sets out what that route addresses.
Diabetes expert witness evidence
A diabetes expert witness reads the glycaemic, screening and referral record across time and identifies where the standard expected was not met.
Practitioners can be filtered by discipline and location before an enquiry is made. See the NICE type 2 diabetes guidance alongside the case material.

Questions answered
Frequently asked questions
Will a Diabetes expert witness respond to Part 35 questions?
Yes - CPR 35.6 entitles the parties to put written questions on a report, and answering them is part of the expert's duty to the court. A Diabetes report prepared for proceedings in England and Wales carries the Part 35 statement of truth, with equivalent duties applying in the other UK jurisdictions.
Can a Diabetes expert act as a single joint expert?
Where the court directs a single joint expert under CPR 35.7, the instruction is agreed between the parties and put jointly - a routine basis of instruction in this field. Whether a particular practitioner accepts SJE appointments is confirmed with the practitioner at the enquiry stage.
Will the expert attend joint discussions or give evidence at trial?
Where the court directs discussions between experts under CPR 35.12, they meet and produce a joint statement of what is agreed and what is disputed; attendance at trial - in person or by video link - is likewise a matter of court direction. These commitments are confirmed with the practitioner at instruction.
Can I choose a Diabetes expert of a specific gender, or one who assesses remotely?
Yes on both counts. Every listing displays the practitioner's gender, consulting locations and assessment types - face to face, remote or both - so sensitive-instruction preferences can be applied at the shortlisting stage, before any contact is made.
