Neurology expert witnesses

Listed neurology expert witnesses address disorders of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscle, including their diagnosis, treatment and functional consequences. Causation is frequently the difficult part of the instruction.

The evidence

What a neurology expert witness is asked to determine

Neurological evidence often requires the objective findings to be separated from the reported symptoms. Examination records, imaging, neurophysiology and the pattern of onset over time each contribute to whether an alleged event explains the presentation. Where symptoms are reported without corroborating signs, the report should say so plainly rather than presenting the account as an established finding.

  • Whether the symptoms and signs recorded fit a recognised neurological diagnosis.
  • Whether investigation, including imaging and neurophysiology, was indicated and undertaken in time.
  • Whether the timing and pattern of onset support the causal link advanced.
  • Whether treatment, including acute intervention and disease-modifying therapy, met the expected standard.
  • What can properly be said about prognosis, capacity for work and future care.

Practitioners are listed across all four UK nations. Location can be narrowed in the register’s location listings before an instruction is made.

Report routes

Reports prepared

Examination, imaging and neurophysiology records support a records review report. A breach and causation report then addresses the deficit alleged.

Where future care and function are in issue, a condition and prognosis report is normally required. Each report page explains what that route addresses.

Neurology expert witness evidence

A neurologist expert witness separates objective findings from reported symptoms and states what the record supports about diagnosis and cause.

Listings can be filtered by discipline and by location, and contact is made direct. See the NICE suspected neurological conditions guidance alongside the case material.
