The evidence

What a radiology expert witness is asked to determine

Radiology evidence often distinguishes a perceptual question from an interpretive one. A later re-read with the diagnosis known is not the same task as deciding whether the abnormality was reportable on the original imaging and clinical information.

  • Whether an abnormality was visible and reportable on the imaging available at the time.
  • Whether the report accurately described, interpreted and prioritised the relevant findings.
  • Whether an urgent or unexpected result required communication or further imaging.
  • Whether the requested examination and imaging pathway were appropriate to the clinical presentation.
  • Where radiology evidence must be read with pathology, surgery, neurology or oncology evidence.

Practitioners are listed by discipline and can be narrowed by location across the four UK nations. The register publishes the listing; the instruction is agreed directly with the practitioner.

Reports prepared

A records review report can deal with the contemporaneous material where an examination is not required. A breach and causation report can separate the standard-of-care question from the clinical consequence alleged.

Where the instruction concerns present symptoms, function or future course, a condition and prognosis report may form a separate part of the evidence. The report pages set out the form requirements.

Radiology expert witness evidence

A radiologist expert witness provides an opinion within the limits of the instruction, source material and discipline-specific expertise. The records and clinical question determine the scope of the evidence.
