Vascular surgery expert witnesses

Listed vascular surgery expert witnesses address arterial and venous disease, aneurysm repair and the management of limb ischaemia. Delayed recognition of acute ischaemia leading to amputation is the most serious recurring subject.

The evidence

What a vascular surgery expert witness is asked to determine

Acute limb ischaemia is judged against the clock. The time the limb was first described as painful, pale or pulseless, the time imaging was obtained and the time of revascularisation determine whether the limb was salvageable, and the records are examined in that order.

  • Whether acute limb ischaemia was recognised when the signs were first recorded.
  • Whether imaging and vascular referral occurred within the necessary period.
  • Whether revascularisation or amputation was appropriately timed and performed.
  • Whether aneurysm surveillance and the decision to repair met the expected standard.
  • Whether the limb would probably have been salvageable with earlier intervention.

Practitioners are listed across all four UK nations. Location can be narrowed in the register’s location listings before an instruction is made.

Report routes

Reports prepared

Observation entries, imaging times and operation notes support a records review report. A breach and causation report addresses limb salvage on the recorded timings.

Where amputation has followed, a care needs assessment and prosthetics evidence are normally required. The report pages state what each contains.

Vascular surgery expert witness evidence

A vascular surgeon expert witness works from the recorded times of onset, imaging and revascularisation, and states what salvage those permitted.

Listings can be filtered by discipline and location, and the approach is made to the practitioner direct. See the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland alongside the case material.
