The evidence

What an ENT surgery expert witness is asked to determine

ENT instructions span a wide field, from grommets and tonsillectomy to nasal surgery and airway management. The relevant sub-specialty follows the anatomy in issue, and the report should identify which part of the pathway the criticism attaches to before addressing technique.

  • Whether the presenting symptoms warranted examination, imaging or urgent referral.
  • Whether a persistent hoarseness, lump or unilateral symptom was investigated as the pathway required.
  • Whether the operation performed was indicated and carried out to the expected standard.
  • Whether a recognised complication such as bleeding or nerve injury was avoidable and well managed.
  • Whether hearing, voice or airway outcome is attributable to the treatment given.

Practitioners are listed across all four UK nations. Location can be narrowed in the register’s location listings before an instruction is made.

Report routes

Reports prepared

Clinic letters, imaging and operation notes support a records review report. A breach and causation report separates the criticism from the outcome.

Where hearing or voice loss continues, a condition and prognosis report may be required. Each report page describes the scope of that route.

ENT surgery expert witness evidence

An ENT surgeon expert witness identifies the anatomical question first, and then addresses the pathway and the technique against it.

Filtering by discipline and location narrows the list before an approach is made. See the ENT UK alongside the case material.
