What a dentistry expert witness is asked to determine
Dental claims rest heavily on radiographs and clinical notes, and on whether the treatment plan discussed with the patient is recorded at all. Periodontal charting, radiograph reporting and the sequence of appointments usually establish whether disease was detected and acted upon.
- Whether examination, charting and radiographs were undertaken at appropriate intervals.
- Whether caries, periodontal disease or a pathological lesion was detected when it was detectable.
- Whether the treatment plan and its alternatives were discussed and recorded.
- Whether the restorative or endodontic treatment provided met the expected standard.
- Whether referral for specialist care was made when the findings indicated it.
