What an electrophysiology expert witness is asked to determine
Electrophysiology instructions turn on documents that are technical and precise: twelve-lead ECGs, ambulatory monitoring, device interrogation reports and procedure records. The question is usually whether the recorded rhythm called for a different decision. Because a rhythm abnormality may be intermittent, the absence of a finding on one recording does not establish that it was absent at another time.
- Whether the rhythm recorded was correctly identified and its significance appreciated.
- Whether ambulatory monitoring or electrophysiological study was indicated by the symptoms documented.
- Whether device implantation, programming and follow-up met the expected standard.
- Whether an ablation procedure was appropriately indicated, performed and consented.
- Whether anticoagulation decisions reflected the risk assessment recorded at the time.
