Dermatology expert witnesses

Listed dermatology expert witnesses address diagnosis of skin disease, the recognition of malignancy, treatment and the appearance of scarring. The instruction should identify whether the issue is diagnosis, treatment or the residual appearance.

The evidence

What a dermatology expert witness is asked to determine

Dermatology evidence often depends on what a lesion looked like at a given date. Clinical photographs, referral letters, dermatoscopy records and histology reports carry more weight than a later description, and the two-week referral pathway is frequently in issue.

  • Whether the lesion described in the records warranted urgent referral or excision at the time.
  • Whether photographs, dermatoscopy and histology support the diagnosis recorded.
  • Whether treatment of inflammatory skin disease, including systemic therapy and monitoring, met the expected standard.
  • What can be said about scarring, pigmentation and the prospects of improvement.
  • What difference earlier diagnosis would probably have made to the treatment required.

Practitioners are listed across all four UK nations. Location can be narrowed in the register’s location listings before an instruction is made.

Report routes

Reports prepared

Clinical photographs and histology reports support a records review report. Where appearance and its effect are in issue, a condition and prognosis report addresses the residual scarring.

An independent medical examination may be required where the appearance must be assessed in person. The report pages record what each type must contain.

Dermatology expert witness evidence

A dermatologist expert witness works from the photographic and histology record and identifies what could reasonably have been seen at each attendance.

The listing records discipline and coverage; availability is settled with the practitioner. See the British Association of Dermatologists alongside the case material.
